Since the door sits off the wall in order to slide it must be wider that the opening to fully hide the opening.
However there are a few general rules we most commonly use.
Measure from inside to inside of the opening.
Measure from outside to outside of casing molding.
Using a tape measure begin at the left edge of the opening and measure straight across to the right edge.
In this example the opening width is 32 4.
This measurement is always greater than the center to center measurement.
How to measure for a barn door in three steps.
If your doorway doesn t have a trim measure the width of the inside of the door frame from left to right.
Add 2 4 to this measurement so your barn door completely covers the entryway without drafts or slight openings.

Your next step is to calculate the width of the door s opening starting from inside the door jamb on.
Add 4 to the measurement and you have your recommended door width.

If the doorway has moldings measure from outside edge to outside edge to determine the proper door width add about 4 to 6 inches to your measurement.
If a door has a closer then the sweep period of the closer shall be adjusted so that from an open position of 70 degrees the door will take at least 3 seconds to move to a point 3 in 75 mm from the latch measured to the leading edge of the door.
The height is a bit trickier based on the casing and header.
Generally most standard barn doors are approximately 36 x 84 or 42 x 80 with enough extra lip to overlap most standard door frames 36 x 80 by an inch or so.
Measure across for the width and from the top of the casing molding to the floor for height.
